‘All Has Been Discovered’ Victorian 14ct Intaglio Pendant - £950 GBP
An original Victorian paste seal generously set in 14ct gold
I LOVE this one. Reading 'All has been discovered' with an opened
pea pod.
This definitely has some humour to it.
This was a bit of a puzzling one to decipher, but these were my findings:
The phrasing "all has been discovered" echoes a widely referenced remark from the late 19th century in scientific circles: "There is nothing new to be discovered in physics now. All that remains is more and more precise measurement." This sentiment is often attributed (perhaps mistakenly) to Lord Kelvin at the 1900 British Association meeting but stronger evidence links it to Albert A. Michelson in 1894, paraphrasing a similar tone.
In fact, earlier still, Philipp von Jolly reportedly told his student Max Planck in 1878: "In this field, almost everything is already discovered..."
In Victorian Britain (1837-1901), scientific advancement and the rise of positivism led many to believe that the major frameworks- mechanics, electromagnetism, chemistry were largely complete.
